Emergency, urgent or routine? Choosing the right level of care

· Dr James Tataw Ashu · Medically reviewed

Knowing which symptoms require immediate emergency services prevents dangerous delay and unnecessary visits.

Remote and routine services are appropriate for a wide range of problems, but a defined set of symptoms always requires immediate emergency assessment.

Call emergency services for chest pain, sudden weakness or speech difficulty, severe breathlessness, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of consciousness, or symptoms of severe allergic reaction.

Urgent but not emergency problems — high fever, moderate injury, worsening infection — usually need same-day assessment in person rather than a video call.

Routine and follow-up matters are well suited to scheduled or remote consultation: results review, treatment adjustment, prevention and second opinions.

Emergency numbers differ by country. Know the number where you currently are, not where you usually live.
