Postgraduate medical training partnerships that last

· Dr James Tataw Ashu · Medically reviewed

Training programmes succeed when local trainers are developed alongside trainees.

Specialist training partnerships between European and African institutions often produce excellent individual outcomes and limited institutional change.

The difference is whether local trainers are developed. Programmes that invest in supervisors create capacity that persists after external involvement ends.

Retention must be addressed openly. Training clinicians who then emigrate is a poor investment for the host institution unless career paths exist locally.

Blended formats help: regular remote teaching and case review between in-person blocks maintain momentum at modest cost.

Accreditation alignment is the final piece, so that qualifications obtained are recognised where the clinician intends to practise.
