Diet and kidney health: separating evidence from myth

· Dr James Tataw Ashu · Medically reviewed

Salt reduction and adequate hydration help; protein restriction and detox regimes are widely misunderstood.

Dietary advice for kidney health is surrounded by more myth than most areas of medicine, partly because advice appropriate for advanced disease is applied to healthy people.

Salt reduction has consistent evidence, mainly through blood pressure. Most excess salt comes from processed food and bread rather than the salt cellar.

Hydration should be adequate, not extreme. Drinking large volumes does not cleanse the kidneys, and in some conditions it is harmful.

Protein restriction is a targeted intervention for specific stages of chronic kidney disease under supervision, not a general health measure.

Herbal and detox preparations deserve caution. Several are associated with kidney injury, and they are frequently taken without being mentioned to clinicians.
