What employers should expect from occupational health support

· JV Healthcare Advisory

Independent advice, confidentiality boundaries and structured return-to-work planning define a good service.

Occupational health support serves two parties with different interests, and its value depends on clinical independence being maintained and visible.

Confidentiality boundaries must be explicit. The employer receives advice on fitness and adjustments, not clinical detail, and employees must be told this before assessment.

Return-to-work planning is where most value is created: graduated hours, adjusted duties and a review date reduce both relapse and prolonged absence.

Preventive work matters too — ergonomic review, workload assessment and mental health support address causes rather than consequences.

Measure outcomes in absence duration and successful sustained return, not in the number of assessments performed.
