Understanding preventive health checks by age

· Dr James Tataw Ashu · Medically reviewed

Which routine checks are commonly recommended in adulthood, and how to discuss them with your clinician.

Preventive medicine is not about testing everything. It is about testing the right things at the right interval for your age, sex, family history and risk profile.

In early adulthood the emphasis is on blood pressure, weight, vaccination status, mental health and sexual health. From the forties onward, cardiovascular risk assessment, lipid profile and glucose testing become more important.

From fifty, national programmes in Switzerland, France, Belgium and the UK add organised screening for colorectal cancer, and breast and cervical screening for women. Uptake varies widely; participation is often the single biggest determinant of benefit.

Kidney function deserves particular attention because chronic kidney disease is usually silent. A simple creatinine measurement with estimated filtration rate, together with a urine albumin test, identifies most cases early.

Ask your clinician what each test would change. A test that will not alter management rarely helps, while a well-chosen one can shift a decade of health outcomes.
