Healthcare management

Choosing quality indicators a clinic will actually use

· JV Healthcare Advisory

A handful of actionable measures beats a large dashboard nobody reviews.

Quality measurement fails most often through excess. Dashboards with forty indicators are produced monthly and acted on never.

Select five or six measures that a team can influence directly: waiting time, follow-up completion, documented medication review, infection rate and a patient-reported measure.

Each indicator needs an owner, a target and a review meeting. Without those three elements, measurement is reporting rather than improvement.

Balance the set. Efficiency measures alone push teams to cut corners; pair them with a safety and an experience measure.

Review quarterly and retire indicators that have plateaued. A measurement set should change as the organisation improves.
