Using NHS and private care together in the UK

· JV Healthcare Advisory

Patients frequently combine both systems; understanding referral routes and record sharing avoids duplication.

In the UK, the general practitioner remains the coordinating point for most care, including when a patient chooses private consultation for speed of access.

Combining both systems is permitted, but the pathways must be kept clean: a private diagnostic result should be shared with the NHS clinician who will act on it.

Record sharing is the common failure point. Private providers do not automatically write to the general practice, and patients should request that they do.

Costs are also mixed: an initial private consultation may be affordable while subsequent treatment is not, so ask about the whole pathway before starting.

For patients splitting time between the UK and continental Europe, a written clinical summary in English and French prevents most avoidable repetition.
